Sociological Review Initiative at York: Call for Papers

 Have you recently completed an essay or research study and think it would be of interest to the Sociological community?

 The Sociological Publications Initiative (SPI) invites you to submit your original work to Inquiries in Sociology at spi.journals@gmail.com for possible publication.

Inquiries in Sociology  an academic journal, sponsored by York University’s Undergraduate Sociology Program, which focuses on the study of issues related sociology. This journal publishes theoretical and empirical research annually, and is committed to providing a platform for undergraduate and graduate students looking to contribute to academic scholarship. SPI was established by three undergraduate students in York’s Criminology and Sociology programs, and is entirely student-run. The editorial board consists of undergraduate students and PHD candidates from York University who are passionate about fostering academic engagement that transcends the parameters of course curriculum.

 This journal accepts submissions from all post-secondary institutions across Canada

 Submission Guidelines are as follows:

  • 8 pages minimum and cannot exceed 25 pages in total length
  • Typed double-spaced, size-12 Times New Roman font, 1-inch margins, and APA format (6th Edition)
  • Include an abstract page that does not exceed 200 words
  • Submissions must be sent via email (in WordPerfect or Word format) to spi.journals@gmail.com from a university email under the subject matter: “Submission”

 The deadline for submissions has been extended to May 10th 2017 at 11:59pm.

 Note: Please remove all identifying material from the body of the paper (name, initials, affiliated post-secondary institution, acknowledgements etc.). The following identifying information should be included in the body of the email submission: first and last name of author(s), affiliated post-secondary institution(s), program, and level of study.

 The first volume is scheduled for a Fall 2017 release. The issue is thematically focused on current issues in sociology, with specific attention being drawn to a variety of topics and perspectives.

 Subtopics for research include, but are not limited to:

Effects of Globalization                                    Immigration

Mass Media                                                        Experiences of Aboriginals

Governmentality                                                Sociology of Gender and Sexuality

Race, Nationality, and Ethnicity                      Youth Cultures

Sociology of Food                                              Social Movements

Cults, Clans, and Communities                       Class, Conflict, and Inequalities

Spirituality, Superstition, and Legends          Consumerism

 Any questions about the SRIY or the journal can be directed to spi.journals@gmail.com under the subject matter: “Questions.”

To submit an article/essay to IS, register as an author with the journal. Upon completing your user profile, you will have the option to create a new submission. Please ensure that your submission is consistent with our submissions guidelines and latest call for papers theme. 

Note: to maintain the integrity of our double-blind review process, we ask that all submissions and abstracts be void of identifying information. Submissions that do not adhere to this request cannot be considered for review.

Peer Review Process
All scholarly submissions will be initially screened by our selection committee for its basic fitness to the scope and theme of the journal, as well as its adherence to the journal's submission guidelines. Manuscripts that make it through to the next stage of the review process undergo double-blind review by our Substantive Editors, Faculty Advisors and Stylistic Editors. This process takes place over the summer, beginning in May and ending in August.
Revision of a manuscript does not guarantee publication. All editorial communication is conducted through the OJS to expedite the publication process. Therefore, it is necessary that authors submit their manuscript directly to this OJS submission portal. Authors can also follow the progress of their submission through their OJS account.

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point Times New Roman font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points.
  • The submission is a minimum of 2500 words and does not exceed 12,500 words in total length (including the bibliography).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • All identifying information (name, school affliation, student number, etc.) have been removed from the submission.

  • All material within the submission has been properly cited in according with the American Sociological Association's (ASA) Style Guide, 5th edition.
  • The submission takes place before the call for papers deadline.
